The Afan Oromo unit which was organized under the auspices of Department of English Language at Jimma University in 1994 E.C. was promoted to Department of Afan Oromo in 2002/03 and started offering B. Ed. degree in Afan Oromo and minor courses to English and Amharic language major students. The department currently offers two programs: B. Ed for regular and extension degree students and a diploma program for extension students, which will phase out in the year 2006 due to the new educational policy. The Department of Afan Oromo has five full time teaching staff of. The Department of Afan Oromo currently has 300 regular from first to third year students. In addition there are 300 hundred-summer students, 100 extension degree students and 60 extension diploma students. The department accepts 120 new students every year.
