In 2000 the Chemistry Department of JIHS joined with the Chemistry Unit of Jimma college of Agriculture (JCA) and promoted to Chemistry Department of Jimma University. Since its establishment as a full-fledged department, it has graduated its first batch of students in Bachelor of Education in 2005. The department has seventeen full time teaching staff. Out of these, two are Ph D. holders, five M. Sc. 8 B. Sc. and two diplomas. In addition, there are four staff on PH.D study leave and two on M .Sc study leave. Moreover, the department has one secretary, one office girl and janitors. The department currently has 309 regular students and 42 extension diploma students. More over, 262 summer in-service students are attending in the department from first to third year summer
